Lessons we learned & games we played : 100 years at Lindsay Road National School

The purpose of the book is to celebrate the first 100 years of LRNS and to acknowledge the contributions so many people made to make the school the special place that it is.

The Editorial team sought contributions from past pupils by way of written memories and articles, photographs and other memorabilia. The teaching staff lead the pupils in writing their memories of school and how they imagined school might be in the future. The book marries together past and present experiences and images along with future dreams, expressed in drawings and writing.

Fionn McCann was commissioned to take photographs for the book. The most touching photo is a 2011 recreation of a 1911 photo showing the entire student body. Both photos are used in the book.

In March 2010 the school began working with Dublin City Gallery the Hugh Lane on their Education Outreach Programme. The artist Beth O’Halloran designed a series of workshops for the children, which explored the history of the school, through viewing and discussing school memorabilia and gave the pupils an opportunity to imagine themselves in this context. This work took place both in school and on visits to the Hugh Lane. While at the Gallery the children explored the collection and examined portraiture, texture, pattern and colour. The childrens’ artwork formed part of the book illustrations and a semi-permanent piece, exhibited both at the school and in the Hugh Lane.
