Enrolment Policy

The enrolment of pupils in Lindsay Road N.S. is at the discretion of the Board of Management and operates in accordance with Rules for National Schools and other relevant circulars from the Department of Education and Science. 

Lindsay Road is a co-educational school under Presbyterian Patronage. The BoM and staff seek to create an environment where everyone is cherished and protected. Older pupils are encouraged to adopt a caring and responsible attitude to the younger pupils and a proper regard for the rights and views of others is encouraged. 

Religious Education is based on the Follow Me series and the school adheres to the curriculum laid down by the Department of Education and Science.


1.    Parents seeking to enrol their child(ren) in Lindsay road national School are requested to return a completed Waiting List Form to the school. (Available here)

 

2.    The names of children, for whom Waiting List forms have been returned, will be placed on a class waiting list.

 

3.    Children may be accepted for enrolment in the junior Infant Class from age four, provided they are four by 31st March of the year of entry.

 

4.    The proposed date of entry must be clearly stated in the relevant space on the form.

 

5.    Normally children are placed on the waiting list in the order in which the school receives the application forms.

 

6.    If parents wish to change the proposed date of entry, the child’s name will be placed on the appropriate waiting list on the date of the original waiting list form.

 

7.    Equality of access is the key value that determines the enrolment of children to our school. No one is refused admission for reasons of ethnicity, special educational needs, disability, language/accent, gender, traveller status, asylum-seeker/refugee status, religious/political beliefs & values, family or social circumstances. 

8.    While recognising the right of parents to enrol their child in the school of their choice, the Board of Management of Lindsay Road National School is also responsible to respect the rights of the existing school community and, in particular, of the children already enrolled. This requires balanced judgements, which are guided by the principles of natural justice and acting in the best interest of all children. Assisting the school in such circumstances, the BOM reserves the right to determine the maximum number of children in each separate classroom, bearing in mind;

·         Size of available space in classrooms

·         Educational needs of children of a particular age

·         Multi-grade classes

·         Presence of children with special educational needs

·         DES maximum class average directives 

9.    At the end of January, Application Confirmation Forms will be sent to parents of all children on the Waiting List for the coming year, beginning in September. Completed forms should be returned immediately. A decision will be made and conveyed to parents within 21 days. 

10. In the event of the number of children seeking enrolment in any given class/standard exceeding the number of places available preceding or during the school year (due to the BOM being unable to provide suitable accommodation, or recruit the required teaching staff) the following criteria will be used to prioritise children for enrolment:

·         Brothers and sisters (including stepsiblings, resident at same address) of children already enrolled.

·         Children from Presbyterian background (World Alliance of Reformed Churches)

·         Others Protestant Dominations

·         Minority Christian Denominations e.g. Orthodox

·         Other Minorities

·         Length of time on Waiting List

·         Maintaining a co-educational status 

11. Other pupils, if newly resident in the area, may be enrolled during the school year, in line with the policy laid out in Number 8. 

12. Pupils wishing to transfer from other schools are enrolled subject to the Rules governing National Schools, as well as our own school’s enrolment policy and local agreements with other schools. 

13. New Junior Infants spend one/two informal periods in school at the end of June to familiarise themselves with their new environment. 

14. Children with special needs will be resourced in accordance with the level of Resources provided by the Department of Education and Science to the Board of Management. 

15. Notwithstanding the availability of such resources, parents of children who are unsatisfied with the level of educational provision in our school, are advised to consider a special school which is designed and resourced to specifically cater for the needs of children with special educational needs.
